Funchal is a town that balances the quick pace and adrenalin pumping teen energy with the relaxed, “chill out and enjoy the scenery” type of deal, pretty much in the same space. There are a variety of shopping centers that provide for both the young and restless as well as the wise and relaxed. The first group can enjoy some heavy duty shopping, buying the latest designer couture or an iPod; the second group browse slowly through the shops and admire the scenery at a cafe whilst enjoying a cup of tea. Perfect balance. The beach and all of the coastline is a huge attraction for everybody. The children, teenagers and adults come together in all sorts of activities. There is always a special place reserved for beach sports, like football, volley an badminton, every main beach has the facilities to support all these games. The purpose of these activities is to separate the noisy athletes jumping around from the people that just want to soak the vitamin D up and enjoy the sound of the sea. There are different parts of the shore for more enthusiastic swimmers and a different place for people who just like to stroll through the water and embrace it. The same applies to the pools of the city, segregating the calm and moody from the more energetic, all very simply and quietly done.
Another big activity that you can do from the sea is the whale and dolphin sighting. There are numerous species that are living just a few miles from the shore. It has been reported that dolphins accompany the ship for the whole trip. A very popular activity of late has been the high quality scuba diving that is done to one of Europe’s first underwater natural reserves and even look around for some sunken chests.
